Controversial LLC tax focus of panel at small business event
BIA’s 5th Annual Small Business Day at the State House features legislative issues affecting New Hampshire’s small business community.
CONCORD, N.H. – Jan. 7, 2010 – New Hampshire small business owners and managers will have an opportunity to learn more about the status of a controversial tax on distributions from LLCs and partnerships at the Business and Industry Association’s 5th Annual Small Business Day at the State House event to be held Jan. 27 at the Holiday Inn, Concord from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m.
A panel that will include opinion leaders, legislators and tax policy experts will address questions such as: How did this new tax come into being? Who will pay for it? How much revenue will be raised? Does it further chip away at the New Hampshire Advantage? Will repeal efforts be successful? The panel discussion is part of an annual event, held in partnership with the New Hampshire Small Business Development Center (NH SBDC) and local and regional chambers of commerce and business associations, that engages
small business owners and managers in public policy discussion and debate.
“As New Hampshire’s statewide chamber of commerce and leading business advocate, the BIA has a strong interest in connecting small business owners and managers to state policy-makers and to provide a forum to make their voices heard on issues that impact their bottom line,” said BIA President Jim Roche. “The expansion of the interest and dividends tax to distributions from LLCs and partnerships—which has generated substantial confusion, frustration and misunderstanding—is one such issue.”
Other highlights of Small Business Day at the State House include a panel discussion with the state’s top elected leaders and an NH SBDC workshop titled “Recovery to Growth: Where are the opportunities?” Participating on the state leadership panel are Senate President Sylvia Larsen, House Speaker Terie Norelli, Senate Republican Leader Peter Bragdon and House Republican Leader Sherm Packard. The state leadership panel will focus specifically on top small business issues of 2010 and how state elected leaders
will resolve them. The Recovery to Growth workshop is designed to help small businesses explore recovery and growth opportunities through government contracting, email marketing and other innovative strategies.
Gov. John Lynch has also been invited to make welcoming remarks.
BIA’s Small Business Day at the State House is sponsored by Public Service of New Hampshire, the New Hampshire Division of Economic Development and media sponsor New Hampshire Business Review. Participating chambers and business associations include the Grantham Area, Greater Salem, Greater Peterborough, Hampton Area, Hillsborough, Mount Washington Valley, Newfound Region, Souhegan Valley
and Wolfeboro Area chambers of commerce, and the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of New Hampshire and Lakes Region Association. The cost to attend Small Business Day at the State House is $15 per person and includes continental breakfast. To register, call 603-224-5388 x116 or visit nhbia.org.
